Out of Context

Out of Context explores what is gained—and what is lost—when works of art are removed from the cultures that created them.

Mixed Media Assemblage

17 x 20 x 4 inches | Custom Framed

2026

At first glance, Out of Context resembles a small museum gallery. Classical sculpture, gilded frames, and carefully arranged objects evoke the quiet atmosphere of a European museum, inviting viewers into a familiar space devoted to the preservation of art.

Yet the subtle placement of an oil lamp and a copy of Plato’s The Republic suggest that the civilization represented here exists elsewhere, beyond the museum’s walls.

Inspired by Charles Baudelaire’s poem Le Voyage, the assemblage considers not only the movement of people but also the journeys undertaken by works of art. Throughout history, countless objects have crossed borders through exploration, commerce, colonialism, conflict, and collecting.

While museums have preserved many of these works and made them accessible to audiences around the world, their displacement also raises complex questions about context, ownership, and cultural memory.

The intimate scale of the assemblage encourages viewers to look closely, much as they might in a museum itself. As the eye moves between the sculpture, furnishings, and architectural details, the room becomes less a celebration of collecting than a meditation on what accompanies every act of relocation.

What is gained when art is encountered by new audiences? What is diminished when it is separated from the landscape, language, traditions, and beliefs that originally gave it meaning?

Rather than offering answers, Out of Context invites reflection on the ways objects carry the histories of the cultures that created them—and how those histories inevitably shift each time they begin a new journey.
